Interoception in Action: An Inclusive Framework for Student Wellbeing

Presentation Overview

True belonging for neurodivergent learners emerges when environments are intentionally structured around how people think, feel, and regulate. At Mancel College, a specialist school for students with Language Disorders, interoception has become a catalyst for systemic change. Rather than positioning regulation as an individual responsibility, we have embedded interoceptive awareness into the fabric of our school culture to promote genuine access, participation, and belonging.
This presentation explores how a whole-school interoception framework can shift systems from reactive behaviour management toward proactive, affirming practice. Through leadership commitment, staff training, and consistent shared language, interoception is integrated across classrooms, therapy spaces, and daily routines. Universal design principles guide our approach: structured body check-ins, visual supports, personalised learner profiles, and sensory toolkits are available to all students, reducing stigma and increasing autonomy.
We will demonstrate how this cultural shift has strengthened emotional literacy, co-regulation, and self-advocacy, while reducing escalation and exclusionary responses. Attendees swill leave with clear, actionable approaches to embedding interoception-informed practices in their own contexts, fostering learning environments where neurodivergent students are supported to succeed and grow with confidence.
