First Nation's Lived Experience Storytelling of Gambling and it's Links to Alcohol and Mental Health
Abstract
*Three Sides of the Coin (3SOC) project will screen a 15min recovery gamble video story performed by Monwell Taukie Levi, a First Nations man originally from the Torres Strait Islands. Monwell developed the performance of his story of gambling harm with Catherine Simmonds OAM, Artistic Director of 3SOC.
A trailer can be viewed below.
Monwell's powerful, intimate performance takes us on his journey of gambling harm, with alcohol and pokies numbing past trauma. He became destitute and homeless until accessing Gambling Help Services that supported his recovery and return to his love of making music. The video is enhanced by Monwell's own musical score, created together with well-known musician David Bridie from My Friend the Chocolate Cake, and Waving not Drowning. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Monwell.
*Three Sides of the Coin lived experience storytelling project disrupts the normalisation of gambling, reduces stigma, humanizes the people behind the addiction, highlights the links with drugs, alcohol, mental health and family violence, and frames gambling as a public health issue. https://threesidesofthecoin.org.au/
Monwell brings his cultural knowledge, advocacy and lived experience to the conversation. The attendees will engage in a discussion that unpacks:
• the role of lived experience storytelling in de-stigmatizing gambling and mental health
• cultural sensitivity when dealing with gambling harm and mental health
• intersectionality of gambling with other health issues eg trauma, mental health, alcohol, drugs, family violence, crime.
• gambling as a public health issue

Biography
Monwell Levi dreamt of being a famous Torres Strait Islander musician, but traumas of the past followed by addiction took their toll, leading him to homelessness, living in men’s shelters, getting hand-outs and feeling great shame. Eventually he emerged with a song he wrote Poker Machine Blues.
