Raising sons with and without Te reo me ona tikanga

Abstract

This is our personal journey being raised without Te Reo me ona tikanga, and a comparison of our whanau raised in Te Reo me ona tikanga at home on our whenua.
In early 2000s I was given a second chance, to raise my three youngest children in Te Reo me ona tikanga, with a partner who had strong connection to Te Reo and his traditional lands.
We share the impacts that have and have not contributed to building resilience and identity for our whanau.
We share the steps we are taking towards Whanau Wellbeing.

Biography

I have 28 + years experience in the Counties Manukau and Northalnd Mental Health and Addictions Services and the past four years working closely with our Maori communities in South Auckland. I received a QSM in 2021 for my work with Maori and Mental Health. I currently work at Manurewa Marae Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Postvention. Also recognised by my peers was nominated a Hauora Leader on the 100 Rangatira website. I continue to strongly advocate for equity for Maori and our whanau.
