The Position and Influence of Lore in Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Abstract

The construct of Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) is widely used to frame the holistic health and wellbeing, including mental health of First Nations peoples. However, much of the existing SEWB discourse has been shaped for the purpose of educating non-Indigenous audiences to become more culturally responsive.
This keynote will explore the deeper role of Lore as an intrinsic and foundational aspect of SEWB for First Nations peoples. Drawing on Gamilaraay epistemology and lived experience, Dr Clinton Schultz will discuss how Lore governs relationships, identity, responsibility, and healing within First Nations communities. He will highlight the interconnected nature of Lore, land, kinship, and spirituality, demonstrating how these elements sustain SEWB beyond Western mental health paradigms.
Delegates will gain insights into how recognising, respecting and privileging Lore in research, policy, and service delivery leads to more meaningful engagement and better outcomes for First Nations peoples. The session will challenge mainstream notions of wellbeing and mental health, urging a shift toward strengths-based approaches that acknowledge the power of First Nations epistemologies and ontologies.
