Inclusive Voices, Equitable Wellness: The Future of Mental Health

Abstract

Mental health is essential for both individual wellness and the effective operation of families and society. Approximately 1 billion people globally experience mental health disorders, resulting in an economic burden estimated to range from $2 to $5 trillion annually. Despite this, little attention is given to the unique challenges faced by minority populations, particularly women, who are disproportionately affected by mental health issues. In the workplace, these women encounter specific barriers to accessing mental health care, which worsens the impact of work-related injuries and associated psychological trauma.
This initiative adopts a culturally informed strategy to create resources tailored to the needs of women from minority communities, combining the biopsychosocial model with the strategies of the Global Consortium for the Prevention of Depression. A fundamental component of the project involves engaging with communities to ensure that the program resonates with their lived experiences, thereby promoting improved health outcomes. A distinctive aspect of this initiative is its emphasis on dyadic coping, focusing on how families can mutually support one another to navigate challenges associated with mental health issues and injuries. By recognizing the crucial role of family dynamics, the program aims to reduce the long-term impact of mental health issues and workplace trauma, ultimately lowering healthcare costs and enhancing community well-being. This innovative approach aims to improve the mental health, resilience and overall well-being of families, serving as a model for achieving mental health equity.

Three Key Learnings:
1. Minority communities, particularly women, experience a higher prevalence of mental health challenges.
2. This initiative employs a culturally sensitive approach to collaboratively develop resources that address the specific needs of women and their families.
3. The goal is to enhance the mental health, resilience, and overall well-being of families.
