Care With Dignity: Reimagining Women’s Mental Health

Abstract

Women’s mental health care is often described through policies and models, yet women’s lived experiences of entering the system frequently involve fragmentation, repeated trauma narratives, and unmet need. This keynote explores where women most commonly fall through gaps in mental health care pathways and why these failures persist.
Drawing on more than twenty years of senior clinical and executive leadership across public and private mental health services in the UK and Australia, including the development of Australia’s first dedicated private women’s mental health service, this presentation examines how current systems are designed and how that design shapes outcomes. It highlights critical transition points across the lifespan such as the perinatal period, trauma, caring roles, and later life where women are most vulnerable to system breakdown.
The keynote challenges traditional risk frameworks and eligibility thresholds that exclude women who are labelled “too complex,” “not acute enough,” or quietly unwell and reframes continuity, relational safety and shame informed practice as core safety mechanisms. Moving beyond critique, it outlines what meaningful redesign requires across workforce, pathways, governance and leadership in real world settings.
Ultimately, this address calls on clinicians and leaders to recognise their role as system designers and to build mental health services that fit the realities of women’s lives, by design.
