Round Table Session: Isolation is the Enemy: If AOD Practitioners Need Collaboration to Thrive, Why Are We Still Working in Silos?

Abstract

Addiction and other drug (AOD) practitioners know that collaboration leads to better client outcomes, yet systemic barriers, workplace pressures, and professional silos often prevent meaningful connection between services and practitioners. If we recognize that working together strengthens both our practice and the people we support, why do so many practitioners still operate in isolation?
This interactive roundtable will challenge the status quo and explore practical strategies for breaking down silos in AOD work. Panelists and participants will share real-world experiences of collaboration—both the successes and the struggles—and discuss how stronger professional connections can improve decision-making, prevent burnout, and enhance client care.
We will examine the obstacles that keep AOD practitioners fragmented, from organisational policies to cultural norms, and explore actionable ways to foster collaboration across disciplines, services, and peer networks. Attendees will be invited to contribute their perspectives, offering insights into the challenges they face and strategies they’ve seen work in practice.
By the end of this session, participants will walk away with fresh ideas, new connections, and a renewed commitment to working better together.
