National Program Enablement: Integrating the Medicare Mental Health Check In within Rural Systems

Presentation Overview

National Program Enablement: Integrating the Medicare Mental Health Check In within Rural Systems Abstract:
The Medicare Mental Health Check In represents a significant shift in rural mental health delivery, providing a scalable, digital entry point for early intervention. This presentation details the National Program Enablement Strategy used to integrate this service into complex regional ecosystems, particularly where physical hubs are transitioning into new local models. A core focus of the session is "Digital Care That Works in the Real World" by addressing the intersection of clinical governance and workforce readiness. We examine the application of the Integration of Assessment and Referral (IAR) decision-support tool, ensuring help-seekers are matched to the appropriate intensity of care within rural settings. The discussion highlights the importance of data integrity and encryption standards to build technical confidence among regional executives and practitioners. Furthermore, the presentation explores how digital models can advance equity and access through the Priority Populations Engagement Strategy. By focusing on Tier 1 groups—including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities, LGBTQIA+SB people, and those in Rural and Remote areas—the program leverages co-design to remove barriers to care. We share insights from discovery interviews and working sessions that identify "moments that matter" for rural help-seekers, ensuring the digital service is culturally safe and accessible. Finally, we outline a "Routine of Engagement" that strengthens integrated rural systems. Through Communities of Practice and "In-Service Spotlights," the program creates a bridge between national digital infrastructure and local acute or sub-acute services. This session provides a practical roadmap for health leaders to deploy digital solutions that are not isolated tools, but integrated components of a coordinated rural care network.
