Building Rural Mental Health-Capable Communities

Presentation Overview

Rural Australia has become increasingly good at talking about mental health. Awareness has grown, stigma is slowly shifting and more people understand the importance of reaching out for support.
But awareness alone does not tell someone what to do when a mate finally says, “Actually, I’m not travelling too well".
Drawing on his own experience of drought, flood, financial pressure, family breakdown, loss of identity and stepping away from farming, Warren Davies explores his complicated relationship with the word resilience and why he believes the conversation needs to move beyond simply
expecting rural people and communities to keep bouncing back.
Warren argues that crisis rarely begins at the point we notice it. Capacity often disappears slowly through accumulated pressure, isolation, exhaustion, financial stress, disconnection and uncertainty.
Through more than a decade of conversations across rural, regional and remote Australia, including extensive work alongside communities recovering from natural disasters, Warren has seen the importance of building capability before people reach breaking point.
A mental health-capable community does not attempt to turn every farmer, neighbour, sporting coach, employer or volunteer into a mental health professional. Instead, it builds ordinary people’s confidence to notice changes earlier, start conversations, listen without judgement,
understand their own limitations, know where appropriate support can be found and remain connected afterwards.
Warren will share practical insights including Capacity Before Crisis, the Unbreakable Wheel of Wellbeing and his TING listening framework Talk, Inquire, Notice and Guide while examining the critical role of local connectors, trusted relationships and clear pathways to professional
support.
Ultimately, the keynote asks a simple question: if awareness has opened the conversation about rural mental health, how do we now build communities with the confidence, connection and capacity to do something meaningful with it?

Biography

Warren Davies, known as The Unbreakable Farmer, is a rural mental health and community wellbeing speaker and disaster recovery practitioner whose work is grounded in lived experience. A former dairy farmer, Warren experienced drought, flood, financial pressure, family breakdown and the loss of his farming identity, eventually reaching a point of personal crisis. Today, he works nationally with rural, regional and remote communities, workplaces, health services and community organisations, helping people move beyond awareness towards practical action. His work focuses on building capacity before crisis through better communication, stronger connection, early help seeking and creating communities where people feel seen, heard and supported.
