Panel: Cultural Fire Management in the Burdekin Dry Tropics
Abstract
We will share lessons learned by Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation on developing a regionally suited scalable model for Traditional Owner leadership of cultural fire management. Sharing experiences of cultural fire management delivery from an Indigenous Land & Sea Ranger program which can not only reduce bushfire risk but also provide a range of co-benefits including improved environmental and grazing production outcomes. The need to seek guidance and leadership from Traditional Owners to tap into the wealth of ancestral knowledge is critical to the development of nature-based solutions.
The cultural fire projects to date have been delivered under the guidance of the Burdekin Dry Tropics Traditional Owner Management Group in collaboration with Traditional Owners, Indigenous partners and land managers and supported by the NQ Dry Tropics Regional NRM Organisation.

Eddie Smallwood - Proud Bindal man and Chair of Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation a not-for-profit social enterprise established in 1999. Successful Land and Sea Ranger Program leading and delivering a range of Caring for Country programs and activities across the Burdekin. Eddie is also First Officer in one of the few Indigenous led Rural Fire Service Units in Queensland - Gudjuda 51.
