Credible Leadership in Crisis and Recovery: How to empower communities before, during and beyond disasters through clear and authentic communication.

Abstract

Leading effectively in times of crisis requires clear, unambiguous and authentic communication.

The communication landscape has undergone a seismic shift and continues to transform as new technology emerges, including a plethora of AI platforms. People can easily circumvent official communication channels, with the risk of creating misinformation and confusion that increases the impacts of the emergency and prolongs the recovery period. At the same time, the community has increasingly high expectations of response agencies.

In such turbulent times, disaster and emergency response leaders must be outstanding, credible communicators – able to galvanize communities to take action, often under extreme pressure.

In this session, Dr Neryl East will draw on her extensive experience working with senior leaders in critical situations. She will reveal the secrets of communicating with such clarity and credibility in high-stakes situations that people sit up, take notice and act on your message.

Audience members will:
• Intensify their credibility in pressure situations by knowing how to authentically communicate the right balance of strength and warmth
• Implement a unique framework that ensures they connect with their audience – whether in high-stakes conversations, presentations or media interviews
• Be equipped with a highly effective structure in crisis situations so they know what to say and when to say it
