Solid Ground - What benefits Indigenous Australians Benefits Everybody
Abstract
Solid Ground is a day program delivering culturally secure education, structure, and strategies for participants to make healthier lifestyle choices and offers a different way to heal that is Aboriginal led and combines the best cultural and clinical learnings. The concept restores dignity by encouraging people to change their lives while living in their community. That’s the Wungening way!
Wungening Aboriginal Corporation was established in 1988 by local Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people, to provide culturally responsive alcohol and other drug services as an alternative to mainstream organisations whose services were not meeting the needs of Aboriginal people. Since 1988 Wungenings AOD services has grown to include one to one counselling services across 5 hubs, Solid Ground Day Rehab, and AOD programs at several prisons across Perth.
Wungening’s Solid Ground program was developed in 2015 to provide a culturally responsive program that utilises Aboriginal concepts such as dreamtime stories, connection to culture and country and Kadadjiny Aboriginal Mindfulness Techniques to facilitate group discussions around healing.
In 2019 Solid Ground won the Strong Spirit, Strong Mind award for innovation and culturally secure Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drugs Program and continues to be delivered within Wungening Aboriginal Corporation at three of its sites across the city, and more recently offered to a virtual audience.
The aim of this presentation is to share the strengths of Solid Ground as an alternate rehabilitation option for Aboriginal people seeking support for their drug and/or alcohol issues. Furthermore, this presentation will delve more into the Solid Ground model highlighting some of the learning's, outcomes and the journey. Finally the presentation looks at process in terms of program design with the people for the people.
