Working with Adolescents who use Violence Towards Their Mothers: Current Research and Attachment Based Interventions

Abstract

Research indicates that adolescents who use violence against their mothers are at higher risk to use violence in future relationships. Moreover, young people who have both witnessed domestic violence and are currently using violence towards their mothers are the highest risk to use violence as an adult. However, working with young people and mothers is a major gap area in service provision.

The purpose of this workshop is to highlight how to work with adolescents, and mothers, to stop violence in the home. We can work together to support families and have a positive impact, not only on their relationship, but also on young people’s relationships with their future partners and children.

Violence in the home will not reduce without a range of interventions. It is crucial to remember that these young people are not “perpetrators,” but victims of domestic violence who have experienced their own trauma and have their own attachment needs.

It is important to address violence in the home and hold young people accountable for their behaviour. However, the key is understanding how domestic violence has impacted the family and how we, as professionals, can rebuild the attachment between mothers and sons. Through joint activities and relationships building, a number of violent behaviours reduce over time and mothers become more confident parents. These families have extremely complex needs, which requires a multilayered response.

Mothers who have experienced domestic violence, and are currently experiencing adolescent – to – mother violence, is one of the lowest help seeking groups. Shame of failing as a mother and admitting that their son is being violent keeps mothers from engaging in support programs.

This workshop will cover current research and David's PhD findings regarding adolescent – to – mother violence, as well as practical therapeutic interventions. Together we will help rebuild the mother / child relationship in a safe and nurturing environment.
