Self - Care for the Workforce Engaged with Violence Victims

Abstract

Experiencing domestic violence and abuse is known to be hurtful and abrasive, but dealing with the victims of domestic abuse and helping them heal can be equally trying. This paper is based on self-care strategies in the nature of therapeutic techniques attempted over a period of ten months for the workforce in an organization of stature that employs 500 staff with diverse backgrounds and serves clientele drawn from three continents. Yoga and Meditation have always been top of the list as healing techniques. During this study, staff and clients participated in face-to-face, and also virtual, mini sessions of yoga and meditation at various locations. The staff, volunteers and clients were 20 to 45 years old. Various options were tried, and therapy protocols adjusted, if not improvised, in response to situations of crisis, and chair yoga was adapted to overcome time constraint as the staff often faced unforeseen situations. Online yoga and meditation sessions were carried out via zoom at the end of the weekly staff meetings enabling the staff from New Zealand, and also from Australia, join for deep breathing and chair yoga. Outdoor yoga and meditation sessions were carried out only for staff in New Zealand. For clients in New Zealand, these sessions were held during client meetings, and noted for creating positive energy. Each session, starting with gentle breathing, followed by deep breathing, helped relax any tensed muscles, gradually moving to chair yoga postures, ending with mini meditation sessions. Staff and clients were asked to share their feelings before and after the therapeutic sessions. All participants reported immediate relief in their tensed muscles, especially in their neck, shoulders and back. These sessions were seen as welcome get-away from work pressures that increased staff productivity and healing of clients.
