Rebuilding HOPE- The Recovery Hub Model for Women and Children
Abstract
Crisis support for victims of domestic violence has long been a priority for governments and organisations in the sector.
What has not been recognised as widely is the importance of providing ongoing support to women and children after they have left crisis accommodation.
Women reported that having to rebuild their lives without support, often in a new location, had a profound impact on their mental health and their capacity to move forward and heal.
Evidence of the effectiveness of the Peer Support Model in the recovery from domestic violence is readily available.
Using this evidence, we investigated the capacity to establish a Recovery Hub- a "one stop shop" holistic model of recovery service delivery, providing a space where DV survivors could build support networks with each other and engage with onsite and visiting professionals providing a range of programs and services for women and children.
In 2018, the Beyond DV team attended an International Conference in San Diego to learn more about the Hub model and to tour one of these facilities.
Returning to Australia, with a strong belief in this model being a viable option to deliver longer-term recovery support, Beyond DV set about finding a location to establish their own hub.
In April 2020, after securing a lease on a Brisbane City Council facility, Beyond DV opened their first Recovery Centre.
Currently Beyond DV is engaged with 150 families, many who attend the Centre several times per week to access multiple programs and services.
Families continue to be engaged with our organisation for many years, giving them a sense of security that, should new issues arise, our team will be there to support them.
To increase to our services and programs, Beyond DV is currently establishing satellite centres across Brisbane.
Feedback from clients continues to inform the decisions we make regarding the provision of programs and services.
3 Key Learnings:
1. The importance of trauma-informed, strengths based recovery services
2. The effectiveness of peer support in recovery
3. The effectiveness of the holistic "one stop shop" model of recovery services
