Change the Story, Australia's National Prevention Framework: What's New in the Second Edition? (VIRTUAL)

Abstract

The first edition of Change the Story, Australia’s shared national framework for the primary prevention of violence against women was developed by Our Watch, VicHealth and ANROWS in 2015. It was endorsed as a national policy framework under the third and fourth Action Plans of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-22, and has been widely embraced and taken up by diverse practitioners and stakeholders across Australia. It has also been recognised in many international contexts as a world-leading contribution to the field of prevention and has inspired work towards similar approaches in other countries.

Our Watch has now developed a second edition of Change the story, which builds on the first edition to provide a fully updated, evidence-based framework to guide a coordinated, effective national approach to preventing violence against women in Australia.

Building on the deep evidence that informed the first edition, this second edition has been informed by a new review of literature produced since 2015, as well as extensive stakeholder consultation. It distils and incorporates the latest evidence and knowledge about the relationship between violence against women and gender inequality, the drivers of this violence, together with various reinforcing factors, and the influence of intersecting forms of oppression on the dynamics of violence against women. It outlines the characteristics of effective prevention practice, and the systems and mechanisms required to plan, implement, and sustain prevention activity across the country. The second edition has also been revised to expand and improve coverage, explanation and illustration of a number of key topics.

This presentation will provide an overview of the new framework, with a focus on ‘what’s new’ in this second edition. It will reflect on what Our Watch has learned in the five years since the first edition was published, and how these lessons have been incorporated into the new framework.

3 Key Learnings:
1. Recently published evidence supports, strengthens and deepens the evidence base for prevention outlined in Change the story

2. Significant feedback and input from diverse stakeholders has enabled Our Watch to revise, improve and expand the framework, ensuring that it continues to incorporate policy and practice knowledge

3. Violence against women is preventable. Change the story clearly outlines the drivers of this violence and provides Australia with an up to date, evidence based national framework for prevention
