Protea Place - A Seat At Our Table
Abstract
With single women over the age of 55 being the fastest growing group within homelessness nationally, we knew Toowoomba was not immune.
With no dedicated women's support service in the region it was vital that this was addressed.
Protea Place was designed on a model of connection and the venue was created to simulate a safe, homely environment. All aspects of the program are through trauma informed practice. This includes the location, decore, staffing and service delivery approach. Offering a day time refuge or "drop in space", women can visit, stay for a hot lunch, access facilities such as showers, laundry, clothing toiletries and more. Women from all backgrounds attend, with many experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence, addiction issues, trauma and other critical life events.
Our approach is to support the woman and her circumstances holistically and uniquely. Women who attend PP will access 5 different types of support on average.
Feedback from service users and outcomes delivered demonstrate the importance of supporting women holistically rather than a "siloed approach" . Women stated they preferred that PP was not a "DV Service, Homeless Service, Addiction Centre" but rather, there to support them through a range on connecting issues and events. Through this approach, women have the opportunity to address housing needs, practical aid, safety and legal matters, addiction and substance misuse, mental health and overall wellbeing.
Much of our foundational engagement and support happens at our dining table. A safe place that nurtures women through acceptance, nutrition, connection and the simple act of sharing a meal together.
Our work is achieved and supported by skilled practitioners on site along with numerous complimentary and professional external referral points . Where possible, these practitioners will engage on site at PP to promote a sense of continuity and security.
A seat at our table is a doorway to impacting and restoring lives.

Biography
Amanda has worked in the Human Services Sector for over 20 years predominantly in Youth, Women, Child Safety, Housing & Homelessness and community development.
In 2018, Amanda identified a gap in service and support to women in the region and designed a program based on her experience in the sector and on the feedback from clients who told her what was missing. From there, Protea Place Women's Support Centre was born. Established in September 2019, Protea Place quickly became a "powerhouse for women". A unique but simple model of support for women providing a non siloed, trauma informed service.
