Abstract

Domestic Family Violence Tenancy Issues

We all know that housing is a priority issue for women experiencing domestic family violence and there is a high risk of homelessness. With about 35% of people renting their homes; DFV impacts on tenancy issues.
The value of dealing with tenancy issues in responding to domestic family violence means helping to promote safety and housing stability.
This session with cover basics of tenancy DFV key issues including
Leaving - notices, getting the bond back, breaking leases
Staying - safety and security, being recognised as the tenant
Starting - tips for restarting, dealing with tenancy database listings
Damage - ensuring the person who has experienced violence is not responsible for damage caused due to DFV.
The visual presentation will include processes for each jurisdiction in Australia, New Zealand and showcase resources to assist workers and clients navigate these issues easily.
We envisage a poster with table of key topics and jurisdictions.
The visual and oral presentation will help identify gaps in tenancy responses to domestic family violence and could be used to promote consistent laws across all jurisdictions

Biography

Rose Brown is the DFV Sector Capacity Building Project Worker at Tenants Queensland. The project provides resources, training and advice and support for workers assisting clients with tenancy issues related to domestic family violence. The project aims to reduce barriers to accessing or sustaining housing and increase safety and stability. Rose has been part of the project since November 2019 and has assisted workers throughout Queensland including periods of time during COVID lockdowns. Rose has over 20 years experience in community services and an accomplished trainer and presenter. She always works with groups engaging participants and encouraging interaction.
