Men who use IPV and Social Work Education: An Uneasy Alliance or Opportunities for Change?

Abstract

The voices of men who use intimate partner violence, regarding their connection with and understanding of services, are a largely absent discourse. This presentation will outline feminist participatory action research undertaken with men who use IPV where men developed a learning resource about their service-based experiences. This resource was shared with social work students and their feedback sought. The findings suggest men who use IPV are motivated to and capable of engaging in meaningful discussion about service-based experiences. The findings also suggest mediated forms of collaboration between men who use IPV and social work students have positive ramifications for both groups. The research outcomes suggest mediated engagement between these groups may impact longer term behaviour change for men who use IPV and future practice choices for social work students.
