Online Dating Safety

Abstract

This half hour presentation will discuss what technology facilitated abuse looks like within the context of dating apps. The presentation will explain what dating apps are and how they work with a discussion of the popularity of their use in Australia. The presentation explores some of the more common abuse scenarios that occur within the online dating world including but not limited to online harassment and misogyny, image - based abuse, romance scams and stalking. The presentation will detail how certain cohorts within the Australian community are more likely to experience these forms of abuse and that these patterns reflect patterns of abuse and harassment in our community more broadly, whereby groups that experience inequality and discrimination are at greater risk of multiple forms of victimisation.

The webinar will cover some ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ of online dating and go through the privacy and security features that are available on most of the major dating apps. We will also cover the options that are available to someone if they experience an of these forms of abuse.

The presentation is appropriate for the general community, survivors and practitioners.
