How to Be an Ethical Bystander - Not Walking Past the Standard You Don't Accept

Abstract

It is fair enough that we tell people that they ought to intervene and call out bad behaviour when they see it, but it is not enough to actually just tell people they ought to do it we actually have to show them how to do it.

In this workshop, Peta Dampney and Ellie Woods from the University of Queensland's Respect Team will take attendees through a version of the training that they have developed and provide to both students and staff at the university. Participants in this workshop will be guided through activities used and shown the resources that are used in these student and staff workshops. Peta and Ellie will also talk attendees through that it has been like to not only personally facilitate the workshop to university students and staff but also some of the feedback that they have received from participants.

Peta and Ellie will also give some insights about how the responses to the training and the UQ Ethical Bystander campaign has prompted further questions about how we can incorporate Ethical Bystander approaches in workplaces and a variety of learning environments.

Participants in this workshop will be able to reflect upon whether the content, resources and activities presented by both Peta and Ellie could also be incorporated into their own workplace training. Attendees will also see how such training can benefit employers and employees to better understand and engage with Respect at Work legislation.
