Supporting Parent–Child Relational Healing Following FV: Development of 3 Trauma Informed Video Resources for Parents

Abstract

At the SAFV Centre we have many parents contacting us, seeking support for their children who have experienced Family Violence. Though we offer a range of therapeutic supports for children the wait for counselling can often be long. In 2021 in consultation with our intake team we started to explore ways we could provide easy to access trauma informed information and support for parents, at the point at which they first contact our service. We felt it was important to be able to provide parents with the tools and resources they need as early as possible following FV to equip them to be the primary providers of support for their children. Through this process we hoped to empower parents through developing their understanding of how FV impacts on children, and the ways they can respond that support connection with their child. In addition we were keen to develop resources that were accessible to parents from a range of backgrounds, that were engaging, and readily available from our website.

In 2022 we were fortunate to receive a grant from the Myer Foundation to assist us to develop 3 video resources for parents, which resulted in the Supporting your Child/ Young Person through Family Violence Video Series. These short animated video resources provide easy to access information for parents about how FV has impacted on their child, and things they can do to respond to these impacts. The videos cover 3 different developmental stages: 0 - 5 years, 5 – 12 years, and 12 – 17 years. In this presentation we will provide an overview of the development of the videos, and share feedback we have received from clients and staff on how the use of the videos have assisted them in providing crucial early intervention support to parents.
