Financial Superwomen Collaboration and Partnerships: Lifechanging Outcomes for Domestic Abuse Survivors.
Abstract
Background
Broken to Brilliant supports the long-term recovery of domestic abuse (DA) survivors through a lived experience and a 'pay-it-forward' model to create a process of mutual rehabilitation (1).
Research identified that women feel overwhelmed, embarrassed, shame and inadequacy regarding their finances. This cross socio-economic group is then exacerbated by DA and the survivors often have their financial confidence eroded.
Broken to Brilliant has partnered with the Financial Superwomen (FSW) Program to provide a safe workshop space run by women for women, providing DA survivors with tools for financial decision-making.
Aim
The FSW Program aims to:
• address each woman’s individual financial situation.
• Increase their financial knowledge and skills to create economic independence, stability, and security.
• Improve their feelings of empowerment and confidence in their finances.
• Support survivors to become independent and free from violence.
Method
DA survivors are invited to attend a 6-hour free workshop where participants move to six 30-minute interactive sessions covering banking, budgeting, renting, buying a home, tax & business and the foundations of rebuilding your life. Participants can opt for a one-on-one free private appointment with Debt Collector, Family Lawyer, Financial Planner, HR Consultant plus more. Each finance professional donates their time and follow-up mentoring.
Results
We will share the change in participants’ financial confidence from FSW workshops held in 2021-2023 using a pre-and-post quantitative and qualitative 5-point Likert scale survey. The barriers and enablers for participants and the program will be shared. Scaling this program to other states will be discussed.
Conclusion
The FSW Program improves participant's financial knowledge and confidence, their ability to solve financial problems and find support to rebuild their lives, some experienced life-changing outcomes. Ten to fifteen financial experts donate their time which is valued at $12,925 per workshop. The program is now running in two states.
