Centering Lived Experience of Intellectual Disability in Violence Prevention
Abstract
WWILD Sexual Violence Prevention Association Inc (WWILD) Peer Workers will share the process we used to create violence prevention animations that centered the lived experience expertise of people with intellectual disability.
Although overrepresented as victim/survivors of domestic and family violence, people with intellectual disability are rarely meaningfully included in prevention work.
As part of the Listen Up! Project, we codesigned and cocreated several animation videos with a group of women and non-binary people with intellectual disability. This was led by our Peer Workers who also have lived experience of intellectual disability and violence. The animations explore popular myths about intellectual disability, which contribute to the high rates of domestic and family violence experienced by people with intellectual disability.
WWILD Peer Workers will share their experiences of:
- Leading the project
- Providing creative input
- The workshops
- Creating safety and support in the project
They will also share the impacts for project participants.
