Specialist Approaches to Managing Sexual Assault Proceedings: An Integrative Review

Abstract

There is growing international recognition that the court system’s response to sexual violence requires reform. This presentation provides a snapshot of the main findings from a recent integrative literature review on specialist approaches to managing sexual assault proceedings. First, an overview of the prevalence of sexual violence and the trigger points in court proceedings which are often re-traumatising for victim-survivors will be provided. Next, selected findings from the review on the various specialist measures being implemented to improve the court system response for victim-survivors will be discussed. The presentation concludes with a compendium of recommended best practice specialist measures.
