Men: Choice and Change – A Casework and Groupwork Program for Male Victim/Survivors of DFV
Abstract
This paper will present an evaluation of a victim/ survivor support intervention for men. While fewer men are victims of DFV, the men who are victims, often experience similar experiences of isolation from social supports as women do. The paper will share findings from interviews with men who completed the program, including exploring how the Women: Choice and Change Program’s Theory of Change needs to change to be relevant for male survivors of domestic and family violence. What are the similarities and differences to similar research with women’s support programs, with the main difference being that the program is delivered in a male-only context, rather than a female-only context?
RANSW’s Men: Choice and Change (MCC) program aims to strengthen responses to the needs of male victims of domestic and family violence (DFV), deepening engagement and providing more holistic and sustained support over time. The pilot project was funded for one year, with men referred to the program from the existing Safer Pathways for Men service. Through MCC, a Project Caseworker provided individual safety assessment and casework and assess men’s suitability for referral through to the MCC group program. The online six-session group program was run twice, in the second half of 2021, to provide men with the skills and understanding necessary to help them move forward in their lives.
