Putting Safety First. The Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia has Made Significant Changes that Address Issues of Family Violence & Risk, and Provides Better Support to Families Involved in the Family Law System

Abstract

The Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia’s Lighthouse Project provides intensive case management and safety planning for families involved in the family law system. Launched by Chief Justice Alstergren at the 2020 STOP domestic violence conference, the project has provided invaluable insights and data that has previously not been available and will be shared in this session.

Much has changed in the Court over the past few years, especially in how family violence and other areas of risk are assessed and cases managed, and importantly how families are supported through the process.

Changes to the case management model now provides early, and ongoing, access to in-house dispute resolution opportunities. Other important changes within the Court includes the introduction of the Critical Incident List, the appointment and work of Indigenous Liaison Officers, the PPP500 list, and many other important initiatives.

The presenters look forward to sharing new data and communicate the significant number of changes that address issues of family violence in the family law system.
