The HOPE Hub at Westfield Carindale- a community response to domestic and family violence
Abstract
Shopping centres are often one of the few places where women in abusive relationships can go, without being monitored by a controlling partner.
In August 2021, Beyond DV Founder/Managing Director Carolyn Robinson met the Centre Manager from Westfield Carindale at a "Coffee With A Cop" event.
This chance meeting would lead to the creation of an Australia first initiative, harnessing the highly accessible nature of a major shopping centre to provide an innovative and extremely effective way for the community to respond to domestic and family violence.
Opened in March 2022, the HOPE Hub is staffed by a trained coordinator seven days a week.
In a discreet location, not far from the local Police Beat, community members can visit the highly-secure Hub to access information, referral and support around Domestic Violence and Mental Health issues.
Service providers can meet with vulnerable clients in private consulting rooms.
Training sessions and community workshops around Domestic Violence and Mental Health can be hosted in the large presentation area.
Women and children who are rebuilding their lives after domestic and family violence can attend recovery programs at the Hub, delivered by the Beyond DV team.
The opportunity to involve so many local community members in the creation of the Hub, from centre management staff, suppliers, tradespeople and retailers, gave everyone involved a strong sense of purpose and a feeling of pride that they had played a part in tackling such prevalent social issues.
The HOPE Hub is already proving that when we "think outside the box", we can create opportunities for better outcomes and meaningful change.
