Family Violence in Faith Settings - 'The Faith Leader's Practice Guide and Toolkit - Preventing and Responding to Family Violence'.

Abstract

I will be speaking about family violence in faith settings and how faith leaders play an important role in society in the way the deliver messages from their sacred texts and traditions. I will speak about spiritual abuse and how it impacts women and children. Many women need closure and often the very first place a victim-survivor will go to for support is their faith leader and community. The way faith leaders respond is crucial. I will speak about the toolkit, language and simplicity in the framework provided in the toolkit that gives a guided conversation on how to have an affective and respectful conversation with victim-survivor/s and those causing harm (without colluding) and where safety is prioritized at all times. I will briefly mention some do's and don'ts and how faith leaders can create a safe space when engaging with community members.

I will speak to practical prevention ideas that faith leaders can do to promote healthy, respectful and equitable relationships and ways in which they can cause further harm and put victim-survivors at risk.
