Mental Health Fire Plan…Everyone Should Have One!
Abstract
Mental health and wellbeing isn’t a destination, it’s a series of skills we develop to be able to ride the rollercoaster of life.
Growing up on a rural property, we had a fire plan. We were taught, if there was a fire, to close the heavy wool drapes and put on our thick denim jeans and woollen jumper, even if it was forty degrees!
In Australia not only do we have many people living in fire prone areas, but we also have many people who experience mental health difficulties. In Victoria, where I live, 17.1% of people live in a bush fire prone area. Across Australia 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health issue in a 12 month period with 45% of us likely to experience a mental health difficulty in our lifetime.
Just as people who live in fire prone areas are encouraged to have a Fire Plan, I believe all people experience stress in life (fire, flood, health crisis, financial stressors, and more) and should have a Mental Health Fire Plan. We need to know at times when we are under stress in life exactly what we need to do and how to access support to stay mentally fit.
Participants in this workshop will:
Learn about the importance of taking proactive steps to develop mental health and wellbeing strategies prior to times of stress and crisis.
Gain an understanding of the range of strategies that promote and help us manage our mental health preventatively and in times of crisis.
Leave the workshop having developed their own Mental Health Fire Plan to help them ride the rollercoaster when the stress of life becomes challenging.
