Towards a LGBTQ+ Belonging: What Does It Mean and Look Like?
Abstract
It is recognised that LGBTQ+ people feel displaced in rural and regional communities resulting in poorer mental health and suicidality. This trend being established across many studies and over time. The sense of displacement comes from a lack of visibility of LGBTQ+ people, and fears (real or perceived) that disclosing one’s identity could come at a physical, emotional, and personal cost – which impacts if and how LGBTQ+ people seek support. While there has been greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities socially, possibly driven by legislation and a stronger emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, this do not always translate into an environment where LGBTQ+ people feel like they can belong. This has implications for health practice in rural and remote communities – particularly on the mental health support provided. This presentation gives a voice to the challenges LGBTQ+ people experience in rural and remote communities and talks to the difference between DEI practices and belonging drawing implications for how we can support rural and remote LGBTQ+ people more effectively.
