Establishing a Remote Clinical Psychology Practice: A Sole-Practitioner's Journey

Abstract

How is it to work as a solo mental-health practitioner in a rural and remote area of Australia? In a small country town where there is minus three degrees of separation. Dr Amanda Rogers shares her journey of establishing and building a private practice, SHEOAK Clinical Psychology, and working as a sole clinician in the rural and remote town of Cleve, Eyre Peninsula. This presentation aims to encourage other practitioners to take the plunge, and hang their shingle, somewhere out on a dusty track. It covers aspects such as the challenges of having to broaden your area of expertise to respond to the needs of the community, how to create your own multidisciplinary team and support networks, manage risk, deliver a flexible but high-quality service, navigate dual (plus plus) relationships, attempt to maintain your own privacy, overcome stigma, not burn out and ensure a sustainable business model. It also covers the delights of working and living in a remote area.

Biography

Dr Amanda Rogers was raised on a farm on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. She worked in Perth and Geraldton as a Clinical Psychologist for 15 years in a range of Government services including Disability Services, Juvenile Justice and Mental Health. In late 2021 she relocated her family to her birth town of Cleve - a remote area of South Australia with a history of very poor access to mental health services. Here she established a Clinical Psychology Practice and works as a sole practitioner, covering most of the Eyre Peninsula (170,000 km2).
