Preventing Burnout: Practical Strategies to Build Mental Fitness to Prevent Leaders From ‘Hitting the Wall’
Abstract
In the past 12 months, 1 in 5 Australians (21%) have taken time off work because they felt stressed, anxious, depressed or mentally unhealthy. In fact, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates stress and mental health difficulties cost the global economy US$1 trillion per year in lost productivity.
Statistics show that mental health difficulties are also taking a toll on our leaders with some reports suggesting CEOs are at twice the risk of mental health issues than the general population. One article stated 49% of CEOs report struggling from a mental health condition and are struggling with stress and fatigue. Bupa Global conducted research and found two thirds of business leaders suffered from mental health conditions.
Ironically, despite 64% of the senior business leaders reporting they were suffering from anxiety, stress, and depression; 1 in 4 leaders reported they felt they have less support for mental health issues since becoming more senior.
If we are to change the tide and slow the tsunami of mental health difficulties experienced by our communities, we need to recognise we need mentally fit leaders to set the tone and pave the way. Mentally fit leaders can lead by example, create workspaces that are mentally healthy, and use strategic thinking to generate novel solutions to problems.
This presentation will provide attendees with:
An understanding of the challenges and stressors leaders are under and why addressing their mental health is critical.
An overview of practical strategies that leaders can incorporate into their daily lives to build mental fitness.
An understanding of the ripple effect in the workplace and our community if we address the mental health and wellbeing of our leaders.
