Planning, Partnering, Engaging, Implementing, Reporting, and Publishing Rural and Remote Mental Health Research

Abstract

Designed for those new to research through to experienced researchers, this highly interactive workshop will cover the key stages and steps towards successful rural mental health research and publication.

The workshop will cover:
• Turning your idea into a research project
• Types research including quality improvement projects
• Convening a research team
• What is co-design?
• Ethics: submission, approval and avoiding ethical ‘landmines’
• Managing an effective research teams
• Ascribing authorship
• Where to publish and what to publish
• What journal editors look for (the good and the bad!)
• Writing with clarity and purpose – abstracts, keywords and SEOs
• Thinking like a reader/reviewer; responding to reviewer comments
• Optimising impact from your research

Format:
The balance of activity will be one third presentation, one third activity/exercises and one third discussion and reflection. The workshop will present key conceptual frameworks for each of the major topics. Practical (group and individual) exercises to apply learning will then followed by discussions of insights and learnings. Relevant documents and supporting materials will be made available to participants. This will be a three-hour workshop, with mid-workshop break.
Each of the workshop facilitators are highly experienced rural mental health research professors who will guide participants through the various stages panning, conducting and publishing research.

Biography

Dr Marg Rogers is a Senior Lecturer in the Early Childhood Education team within the School of Education. Marg is the lead researcher for the funded Early Childhood Defence Program project (ECDP). This team, along with their Steering Committee of stakeholders has developed research-based, free, online, evaluated resources for early childhood educators, parents and family/social workers to better support young children from Australian military families. Marg is an ECR Regional Australia Mental Health Research and Training Institute (RAMHeaRT) which aims to build place-based research capacity to improve mental health in regional, rural and remote Australia through the Regional Universities Network.
