It Takes a Village: Integrating Support for Infant, Child and Family Mental Health

Abstract

The mental health, wellbeing and development of infants, children and their families can be enhanced by the availability of a strong network of natural and professional supports. Numerous reviews have highlighted gaps in the availability of these supports nationally, with gaps heightened in most rural and remote areas.
Several national strategies are in progress to respond to these gaps including the Emerging Minds: National Workforce Centre for Child Mental. This national workforce development strategy funded by the Australian Government is a multi-component strategy designed to strengthen the capability of health, social and community service professionals and organisations to deliver integrated support for infant and child mental health, wellbeing and resilience.

This presentation will:
1. Outline findings of research and reviews on the capability of service networks to respond to the mental health needs of infants and children in rural communities.
2. Describe key workforce development strategies being implemented nationally to enhance the practice of different professionals connecting with children and families.
3. Share initial evaluation findings about the impact of current strategies on the capability of different workforce groups.
