Beyond the Sidelines - Football is at the Heart of Rural Communities
Abstract
Beyond the Sidelines has been developed to challenge the status quo of Tasmania's rural sporting clubs.
Beyond the Sidelines is a new RAW initiative to deliver an innovative program in partnership with sporting clubs that inspire the entire club to manage their own well-being and to support their mates.
We know that sporting clubs are the center of rural communities and sports play a pivotal role in developing positive, connected, and caring communities.
Beyond the Sidelines has been developed using a prevention first framework to allow clubs to understand mental health and wellbeing practices in a practical and tangible way. The program is a holistic program which RAW is able to provide multi-layered forms of support to clubs which includes, but is not limited to:
24/7 phone support through RAW’s 1800 RAW TAS, with one-one support available to individuals
Establishing Club Well Being Officers
Creating and establishing preventative health and wellbeing content and practices for club and league communication channels
RAW will also work closely with clubs and leagues to encourage all rural Tasmanian football clubs to implement a well-being strategy by:
Partnering with RAW to deliver interactive athlete well-being program to participants
Recruiting a club wellbeing officer
Provide Mental Health First Aid training to club officials delivered by a RAW Workplace trainer
Beyond the Sidelines is coordinated by lived experience workers, with experience in sport and mental health. The presentation will highlight the importance of building strong relationships with people who are traditionally hesitant to request help. By taking the program to the participants and using football to start the conversation, RAW is able to increase it's impact and self referrals for psycho-social counselling has increased.
