Establishing Regional Cross-organisational Programs to Elevate Lived and Carer Experience and Grow the Peer Workforce
Presentation Overview
The Murrumbidgee Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Alliance is a regional network of 25 organisations, including service providers, carers, and individuals with lived experience. Established in 2015 through a Memorandum of Understanding among 11 founding organisations, the Alliance fosters cross-sector collaboration to improve mental health and alcohol and other drug outcomes in the Murrumbidgee region. It adopts a strategic, region-wide approach to service awareness, gap identification, and coordinated support. Members benefit through resource sharing, strengthened service systems, and enhanced funding opportunities, collectively aiming to improve care for consumers and carers across the region.
A key initiative for the Murrumbidgee MHDA Alliance is the establishment of a cross-organisational Lived Experience, Peer, and Carer Network in the Murrumbidgee region. Unlike traditional, organisation-specific networks, this unique regional initiative provides an opportunity to foster collaboration and information sharing, while actively learning from diverse lived and carer expertise.
By involving individuals with lived and living experience in decision-making across the sector, The Network aims to contribute to a more inclusive, person-centred, and effective mental health and drug and alcohol system across the region.
A key program offered by the Network and Murrumbidgee MHDA Alliance organisations is the Peer Work Placement Program, which aims to build a supported and sustainable Peer Workforce in the region through facilitating pathways into Peer Work.
The Peer Work Placement Program provides unique cross-organisational, supported work experience opportunities to assist aspiring Peer Workers to build on their skills and sector knowledge in preparation for entry into the peer workforce. The Peer Work Placement Program aims to enhance the value of peer work and empower people with lived/living experience to develop the skills to pursue a career in the mental health, drug and alcohol sector.
