Delivering mental health care: Mood Checkers for new dads
Presentation Overview
Expectant and new fathers lack information about their own and their partner’s mental health. Their wellbeing is rarely assessed, they have few opportunities for peer support and rely on Google for parenting advice. Since 2021 SMS4dads and SMS4DeadlyDads (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fathers) have delivered over 3 million SMS texts to more than 18,000 fathers across Australia. SMS4dads and SMS4DeadlyDads deliver from 3 to 6 brief texts per week from 12 weeks gestation until the baby is 12 months of age on three themes: father-infant attachment, father-partner support and self-care. Follow on texts (4 per month) focus on fathers’ role in toddler management, child development, teamwork and mental health care. SMS messages and resources include tailored support, co-designed with fathers and mothers with lived experience for: fathers with a baby admitted to NICU, fathers whose partners are mentally distressed, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fathers, fathers grieving pregnancy loss or stillbirth and fathers with a child who has a disability. In this presentation mainstream and First Nations rural fathers use of the interactive Mood Checker texts will be described as part of the opportunistic screening for mental distress incorporated into SMS4dads and SMS4DeadlyDads.
