Supporting Young Farmer Mental Health: lessons learned through research

Presentation Overview

This presentation reports on lessons learned by academic researchers about how to support young farmer mental health in New Zealand.
Background: Over the last 4 years researchers at Massey and Lincoln Universities in New Zealand have undertaken research to learn more about how to support the wellbeing of young farmers including agricultural students. Beginning with exploring the efficacy of wellbeing education to talking with young farmers and key stakeholders we have learned much about what works and doesn’t work when supporting young farmers’ mental health.
Method: Our methods have included quantitative evaluative surveys and qualitative semi structured interviews. Alongside our survey responses we have also heard from 52 young people (farming or studying agriculture), 18 stakeholders (industry and education specialists) and 10 peer facilitators.
Findings (key learnings): Younger generations of farmers are more open to talking about mental health than previous generations. Social connection either in-person or virtually is the most important factor for young farmer wellbeing. Stigma is still the biggest barrier to young people seeking help and support for their mental wellbeing. Through our research we have learned that Mum’s (or mum equivalents) are critically important to mental health education and support for young farmers; and that mental health education can and does make a difference.
Implications: The findings of our research have implications for all of those interested in the wellbeing of young farmers including educators, health professionals, rural professionals and rural community members. In knowing how to support young farmers we can tailor supports and education to best met their needs. Our research highlights the value of what is being undertaken to support young farmer wellbeing, but also indicates there is still more work to do.
