Running a Sustainable Rural Private Practice Without Burning Out
Presentation Overview
For most mental health professionals, our university training fails to cover the fundamentals of how to run a business - which is what a private practice is. We fend for ourselves, make it up as we go along, and learn from trial and error (quite often mostly by error). But there are some guiding principles that can help you sort out your business priorities, plan your business goals, and structure your business in a way that will maximise the chances of it's success, sustainability, and longevity.
We will introduce such concepts as the 'six pillars of business' and ethical marketing practices. We'll also discuss some simple strategies you can implement straight away to get you on the right track.
I have run a successful private practice (with a strong rural outreach component) for over 20 years, and have provided business coaching support to private practice owners Australia-wide, many in rural communities. Although this workshop can only provide a brief introduction, the concepts and strategies discussed have been utilised successfully by many private practice business coaching clients of mine.

Biography
Tess is a clinical forensic psychologist and private practice business coach. She worked in prisons, community mental health, and academia before commencing private practice. The Crawley Clinic has offices in Hobart, Launceston and Melbourne, and provides rural outreach around much of Tasmania. Since 2007 the clinic has trained over 70 students and interns. Tess also supports other Australian private practice owners as a business coach. In this capacity, she has helped over 1,000 private practice owners Australia-wide. Tess was named a Psychologist of the Year Finalist in 2019 and 2024, and won the 2024 Allied Health Leadership & Management Award.
