"Small Town Syndrome" Finding a Cure

Abstract

In this presentation, we will explore the challenges and solutions encountered when working in a town with fragmented services and limited resources. The lack of transportation, prevalence of natural disasters, and minimal housing options create significant barriers to accessing and coordinating support.

As a "one-stop shop," I took on the role of connecting services, mobilizing funding, and leveraging personal relationships to navigate the complex landscape. Building rapport became crucial, and I discovered that finding common interests with individuals and organizations helped establish trust and collaboration.

In the small town of Gympie, I quickly became acquainted with the community and developed strong relationships. This led to opportunities for collaboration, such as rewriting evidence for clinicians and securing favors from partner organizations. By working together, we were able to address the challenges of limited resources and achieve positive outcomes for clients.

Transportation limitations posed a significant obstacle, but the COVID-19 pandemic sparked innovative solutions. Online platforms like Teams and Zoom enabled virtual appointments and collaborations with clients, even facilitating access to specialized treatments like Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I also introduced the use of the Beyond Now app for clients to create safety plans.

Through my collaborative approach and continuous learning, I have gained the trust of various stakeholders, including Centrelink staff who now seek my assistance in calming clients and providing direction. By bridging service gaps, developing a broad understanding of various specialties, and referring appropriately, I have been able to overcome challenges and ensure clients receive the support they need.

This presentation will highlight the importance of collaboration, resourcefulness, and adaptability in rural communities with limited services. By sharing my experiences and strategies, we can explore ways to improve service coordination, enhance access to resources, and ultimately make a positive impact on individuals' lives.

Three Key Learnings:

1. Collaboration within multiple organizations is the key to better servicing.
2. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses, sharing your strengths, and working on your weaknesses.
3.Growth and knowledge are power.

Biography

Born and raised in Rural FNQ, I faced the challenges of mental health without access to support. Determined to make a difference, I relocated to Townsville and embarked on a journey to navigate the available services. I tirelessly pursued every opportunity to learn and discovered the abundance of resources, funding, and knowledgeable professionals within the field. Recognizing the need for comprehensive support, I dedicated myself to becoming an all-in-one solution. Today, I am proud to serve as a Mental Health Recovery Facilitator, pushing boundaries and creating change in the Greater Gympie Region.
