Gippsland PHN’s Lived Experience Pilot Program: “Leading the Way”

Abstract

Key Words: Lived Experience workforce, rural and remote, Lived experience -Consumer perspective.

Gippsland Primary Health Network (PHN) is leading the way with its Lived Experience (LEx) Pilot Program and is 1 of 4 PHNs (31 in total) to have LEx Identified roles within the organisation. The LEx Program recognises and values the importance of LEx perspective within Gippsland PHN’s core functions and activities, and how the perspective can help enhance and shape mental health reform in the region.
The Pilot Program goals included:
1. Support the lived experience workforce
2. Utilise the lived experience workforce
3. Grow the region’s lived experience workforce (out of scope for pilot)
These goals were achieved through activities including co-designing a LEx action plan with the PHN LEx workforce, and the LEx workforce being involved in evaluation design and processes.

Gippsland PHN's Lived Experience pilot project commenced in 2023 with planning and organisational readiness, then recruitment of lived experience staff, development of a lived experience action plan, and evaluation.
The presentation will share the results, learnings, and recommendations from the pilot program as well as our next steps in the growth and development of the lived experience workforce in our commissioned services and across the Gippsland PHN region.

Three Key Learnings:

The presentation will provide the following learning outcomes:
1. How to establish a LEx workforce that thrive within in a supportive environment,
2. Offer insights into how embedding LEx into strategic positions can assist in mental health reform
3. Identify opportunities to embed lived experience within the commissioning cycle.
