Abstract
Solstice - The Documentary 55mins
It began as a story of one Albury family who had lost their daughter to suicide but quickly became a document bearing witness to the need for urgent and radical change in mental health support as more and more survivors of suicide added their voice.
When 15 year-old Mary Baker died by suicide in Albury her parents embarked on a journey to shine a light on the darkest night of their lives. ‘Solstice’ is a hopeful, determined and positive story of change that can come out of a most heartbreaking tragedy. Beginning with the story of Mary’s parents, Annette and Stuart Baker, the film expands out to journey through Australia and across the globe documenting the stories of those who are daily on the frontline in the battle for better mental health care - the survivors of suicide. This film bravely steps into the gaping hole left when a person dies by suicide to begin conversations, unite communities and ignite positive change.

Biography
Annette Baker OAM is a community advocate, spokesperson and fundraiser for issues around mental health and suicide. In 2011 Annette’s 15 year old daughter, Mary, took her own life after a three year battle with an eating disorder. It was then that Annette and her family vowed to fight to remove the stigma and silence associated with suicide and raise funds and awareness in the Albury Wodonga region and beyond.
Annette has been instrumental in creating several non profit, community support groups and fundraising events for mental health. She is the founder of Survivors of Suicide and Friends and an instrumental organiser of Winter Solstice and Albury Wodonga Big Splash. Annette Baker is also on the taskforce committee for Australians for Mental Health.
