Attracting and Increasing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce

Abstract

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are fundamental to the success of improving outcomes for Indigenous peoples. A Culturally safe work environment is central to the attraction, recruitment and retention of rural Indigenous employees and is impacted by the pursuit of culturally safe work environment, the use of respectful and inclusive language and Culturally safe organisational practices.
This presentation aims to provide information and understanding of the importance of the work environment required to attract, recruit and retain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.
The presenters will:
1. Present about the importance of a culturally safe workplace from attracting employees through to retention, considerations about language.
2. Highlight the importance of organisation's practices to retain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.
3. Discuss the importance of Cultural support and or supervision and choice of models and participation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.
4. The importance of commitment and action of organisation's to effectively employ and retain an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce.
5. Highlight the importance of employee education opportunities that meet needs and are available for rural employees.
6. Discuss the importance of unlearning and relearning to support and implement effective workforce plans.

Biography

Belinda is a Worimi, Wailwan, Barkindji, Wiradjuri woman from NSW, with business, management and therapeutic care experience in child and family safety, healing, leadership, and community sectors. Belinda is known for her leadership and is an experienced manager with a depth of understanding of strategic planning and support of multi-disciplinary teams. Belinda has grass roots through to senior executive levels and worked nationally with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families, and communities as a lead Aboriginal Consultant, on various projects and she provides leadership, mentoring and support to others in relation to cultural safety, protocols, therapeutic care, and leadership.
