Forestry Fit - Wellbeing Program Designed for Industry

Abstract

The harsh reality for the Tasmanian forestry and timber industry is that workers mental health and well-being is often neglected.

The Cutting Through program was created by RAW and is delivered across Tasmania to ensure a sustainable and thriving forest and timber industry.

The program delivers a holistic, multilayered approach, involving education, awareness and practical support that is tailored to the unique situational stressors experienced by individuals working or operating within the Tasmanian forest and timber sector.

Rural Alive & Well's core impact is through being able to provide proactive one-on-one support to people across the industry. The support specifically addresses and helps individuals work through unique situational stressors and challenges associated with the seafood industry.

The team at RAW have unique, first-hand experience within the forest and timber industry.

Program manager Dave, is a Saw Doctor by trade and has worked across Tasmanian, national and international locations over the past 30 plus years.

Outreach staff provide genuine and authentic support. It doesn't matter whether it's in the sawmill, nursery, logging coupe, lab, or plantation, conversations happen wherever you are most comfortable.

The presentation will include how RAW is working with industry peak bodies and key stakeholders to improve the mental health of workers.

Biography

Dave brings extensive experience in the primary industries sector, management/leadership and stakeholder relationship expertise to this position. Dave has 25 years of management experience, dating back to French’s Sawmill at Scottsdale, before creating his own business Cutting Wear Solutions (CWS) 19 years ago. In addition to managing CWS, Dave is also a Senior Management Consultant for T & F Industrial Saw Services where he provides expertise in staff management, technical processes and overall culture and performance.

Biography

Barb is the current CEO of Rural Alive & Well, a Tasmanian not for profit which builds healthy and resilient rural communities to reduce the prevalence of suicide in ages 14yrs and above. Barb is steadfast in not taking mental health and wellbeing for granted and uses her lived experience in mental health and wellbeing which has seen RAW become the leading organisation in Tasmania for rural mental health and wellbeing support. Having lived in a remote Tasmanian towns all her life, Barb understands first-hand the complexities and joys experienced from remote and rural areas, and is excited to be able to bring her knowledge and passion to this year’s Program Advisory Committee.
