My Therapy House – Creating a Space Where Neurodivergent Children and Families Truly Belong

Presentation Overview

Three Key Learnings:
1. Creating neuroaffirming spaces fosters self-concept, identity, and belonging. Children thrive when their individuality is honoured. Designing sensory-friendly spaces, using strengths-based approaches, and supporting diverse communication styles, helps children develop a strong self-concept and a genuine sense of belonging.

2. Neurodivergence, mental health, self-acceptance, and purpose are deeply connected. Anxiety, masking, and low self-worth often stem from societal pressure to conform. Prioritizing emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and holistic well-being helps neurodivergent children embrace their identity and discover their purpose with confidence.

3. Empowering families and professionals through neuroaffirming, developmental approaches ensures children feel valued, leading to confidence, friendships, and meaningful connections.

At My Therapy House, we believe every neurodivergent child deserves to be seen, heard, and valued for who they truly are. In a world that often defines individuals by their deficits rather than strengths, how can we help children develop a positive self-concept, identity, and purpose? This presentation takes you inside our unique, neuroaffirming space, where we challenge outdated intervention models and redefine support for neurodivergent children and their families.
Drawing from personal and professional experience, I will share my journey as a highly sensitive child with sensory challenges—constantly searching for belonging yet facing bullying and exclusion. My autism diagnosis in 2024 provided clarity, reinforcing my commitment to advocacy. Through years of development, I created My Therapy House, a sanctuary where children, families, and professionals thrive. We will explore how our tailored environment supports sensory needs, how predictable routines reduce anxiety, and how our strengths-based approach fosters self-worth and genuine friendships and relationships.
Neurodivergence and wellbeing are deeply connected. Mental and emotional health shape how we experience the world and how we are supported. At My Therapy House, we prioritize emotional regulation, self-acceptance, and holistic well-being. Our safe space allows children to express themselves without fear of judgment, supporting mental health through affirming relationships, therapeutic play, and self-advocacy.
We challenge the traditional medical model that seeks to normalize children, instead embracing approaches that celebrate individuality. We will discuss working with children who experience extreme anxiety, including those with PDA profiles, and using developmental, play-based assessments instead of deficit-driven standardized tests. Attendees will walk away with actionable strategies for fostering a neuroaffirming approach in their own settings. If you seek true inclusion and empowerment for neurodivergent individuals, this presentation is not to be missed. Join us in creating a world where everyone belongs and is accepted for who they are!

Biography

Dana Baltutis is a Speech Pathologist, Trainer and Coach. She struggled with friendships, confidence, and was often teased. Seeking connection, she joined a dating agency where she met a ‘quirky’ man, whom she later married. Ten years on, their unique traits complement each other perfectly. After receiving her neurodivergent diagnosis, her husband simply said, "I'm not surprised." They’ve adapted their relationship to honour their differences Dana’s need for quiet, and her husband’s love of technology. With Bindy, she co-created Steps to Connect to help young adults shift their self-concept, build confidence, and form meaningful friendships.
