Abstract

At Babbingur Mia, our mission is to provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive care tailored to the unique needs of our community. Our services encompass maternal and child health, adult primary care, and mental health support, all delivered by a dedicated team with 90% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Our commitment to holistic care extends beyond physical health, recognizing the importance of emotional, social, and cultural wellbeing. It is proven that health delivered to Aboriginal people by Aboriginal practitioners results in better outcomes, and we take pride in embodying this principle.

Despite limited funding as a not-for-profit organization, we are dedicated to meeting the critical needs of our community. Our initiatives include community engagement programs such as Playgroups for infants and toddlers and Women's Yarning group, nurturing connection, culture, and support. Babbingur Mia's dedication to person-centred care has been acknowledged, having been nominated for the Nurses and Midwives WA awards. Our collaborative model, including shared care maternal health services provided by our endorsed midwife and Aboriginal GP, ensures culturally appropriate and supportive care throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Central to our approach is community involvement. We have established an Aboriginal Reference Group comprised of local elders and community representatives, ensuring our services remain responsive to the needs and aspirations of those we serve.

Babbingur Mia is not just a healthcare provider but a symbol of holistic care and community empowerment. Our commitment to excellence, cultural sensitivity, and community engagement drives our mission to improve health outcomes and wellbeing among Aboriginal peoples.
