Mental Health First Aid, Empowering First Nations Mob to Deliver Courses in Community and Workplaces.

Abstract

For 24 years Mental Health First Aid International has delivered training programs across Australia and Internationally that aim to improve mental health literacy, reduce stigma, increase pathways to professional support, build community capacity to support people experiencing mental health problems, and create a more compassionate, informed society.

We have a dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program Team that recognises the importance and need for culturally informed and responsive mental health training to empower individuals and communities. All courses within the program have been developed by an Aboriginal curriculum developer in consultation with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid Program Team and Master Instructors and has been purposely designed to support our Licensed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid Instructors to draw upon their own unique and instrumental local cultural knowledge, to enrich the content and enable culturally informed and safe delivery.

This presentation will provide an overview of Mental Health First Aid International while focusing on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid Program, social impact and highlight the suite of courses available.
