Details
Under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, all Commonwealth, State and Territory governments have committed to working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. While governments have been taking the positive step of seeking the views and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities more than ever before, we are often left disappointed when these views aren’t turned into action. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities are experiencing consultation fatigue, repeating the same conversations and raising the same policy solutions they have for years, sometimes even decades. It is time for governments to move from asking us what we need to acting on what we say. In this presentation, Catherine Liddle, CEO, SNAICC – National Voice for our Children will explore the issue of over-consultation as it relates to child and families policy reform and will look at what can be done to move from ask to action. There are emerging examples of shared decision making and partnership between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Government that are driving action like the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy Partnership, the Safe and Supported Leadership Group and the Connected Beginnings program. Drawing on these examples, Catherine will discuss what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities want for their children and families and how this can be taken forward by governments and decision-makers to deliver tangible, meaningful change that will make a difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.
