“Choice in Transition: Supporting Growth Within and Beyond the Job”
Presentation Overview
This presentation addresses the critical issue of transition for emergency services and frontline professionals, exploring the unique challenges they face during their careers and when moving beyond service. Drawing on Phoenix Australia's extensive research, clinical expertise, and knowledge mobilisation capabilities, we offer innovative strategies to support individuals, teams, supervisors, and organisations through these pivotal life changes.
We recognise that frontline work profoundly shapes identity, community, and purpose, serving as both a strength and potential vulnerability during transitions. The Respond Assist project, managed by Phoenix Australia, provides a comprehensive platform for industry-wide engagement in the transition process, incorporating support mechanisms and navigating complex systems.
Grounded in lived experience leadership and contemporary evidence, our approach focuses on three specific learning outcomes:
Identity and Purpose Across the Career Span: Participants will gain insights into how frontline work shapes identity, understanding its dual nature as both strength and vulnerability. They will learn strategies to re-anchor purpose when transitions disrupt stability, ensuring a continued sense of meaning throughout their career.
Agency Through Everyday Choice: Attendees will explore how small, deliberate choices around meaning, mindset, and response can restore control and promote resilience. This outcome emphasises practical techniques to protect against injury and maintain wellbeing during uncertain times.
Pathways Beyond the Job: The presentation will provide practical insights into preparing for life and identity beyond frontline work. Participants will learn strategies to engage with complex systems, emphasising hope and adaptability in their approach to post-service life.
By framing transition as an opportunity for growth, we aim to equip attendees with the tools and perspectives needed to foster long-term wellbeing and success. This presentation is essential for frontline professionals, supervisors, and organisational leaders seeking to support their workforce through various life and career transitions, creating healthier and more sustainable pathways across the career span.
